Key Peninsula Preschool is a nonprofit organization in Lakebay, Washington, that offers childcare services in the middle of a childcare desert. Due to this demand for quality childcare in a rural area, the dedicated teachers at Key Peninsula Preschool began an initiative to expand their childcare center.
However, providing a suitable building that met modern fire safety standards proved more difficult than expected. Modern building codes are usually designed for urban settings, making it extra challenging for remote and rural organizations to meet said codes.
For similar reasons, the infrastructure of buildings in these rural areas predisposes community buildings to unconventional fire safety challenges.
Faced with a safety dilemma, Key Peninsula Preschool had to decide between an estimated $500,000 to invest in a sprinkler system and water tank to achieve proper code or find an alternative fire safety solution more compatible with their budgetary needs.
Working closely with dedicated Pierce County Fire Marshal Ken Rice, Key Peninsula Preschool explored alternative fire protection methods and discovered intumescent paint as a viable solution. Intumescent paint is a protective coating that expands into an insulating layer when exposed to flame and can preserve building integrity for up to two hours during a fire.
FlameOFF Coatings intumescent paint, Fire Barrier Paint, offered an innovative solution that helped Key Peninsula Preschool meet the fire safety requirements necessary for occupancy at a fraction of the cost of installing a sprinkler system. Utilizing intumescent paint, Key Peninsula Preschool successfully addressed fire safety concerns, enabling them to move forward with expanding their childcare center.
